Hi,

What is the best way to manage documents in EW? Or use EW as a document managing solution.

We want to save documents like reports in a customer record. Should we use a file field type to attach it?

If the document is saved in a file field type in the database, the database can grow fast if there are a few hundred or more documents attached. So the preferred way is to store it in the file system on the EW server. Can this be done? If yes, how?

regards,
Psy

The best way to manage documents in EW is to use a new type of field introduced recently called "File with Versioning". It can be configured to allow the users to check-in and check-out so that a file is not overwritten by one user while another is already working on it.

The files attached to such fields are stored as blobs in the file system rather than directly to the database. As such there shouldn't be a concern for the database size.

Great!

In what version will the field be availlable?
(And when will it be released ;-))

The field type is already available in our beta version (build 15078) and will be officially released in a week or so. For instance, some of our evaluation servers like http://sc5.enterprisewizard.com/gui2/login.jsp are already using it.

Yep, I saw it. Also the image with versioning field.

Will there be a way to control where the files are actually stored? For example on a partition with enough free space?

The binary object files are actually stored within the EW "data" folder currently. Only the backup can be set to an external folder. You may submit an enhancement request if you need such a feature through http://www.enterprisewizard.com/support-login.htm
